I'm so tired of this political nonsense. With the way the Republican Party has treated Blacks and other minorities, it makes you wonder why any black would want to be associated with the GOP. However on the flip side , the Democratic Party has been just as bad when it comes to Blacks , Latinos and others. They don't really address our issues. Blacks in the GOP today are clowns and the are enslaved mentally. They are still living on the plantation. After Reconstruction you had many Blacks in the Republican Party win politcal seats. From this Hiram Revels became the first African-American U.S Senator from the State of Mississippi. Blanche K. Bruce would also serve as U.S Senator from Mississippi. There many other Black Republicans in office from states like South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, etc. They thrived in office until they were thrown out of office due to White Supremacy. Let me make one thing clear. The GOP of that time is different from today's GOP. Over the years the Democats have taken position of Blacks beloved political party. One time in history they were the party of George Wallace the racist former Governor of Alabama who said " Segregation Today, Segregation tomorrow and Segregation Forever". Both Political parties have ill served the African-American community as well as the rest of the African Diaspora. I think Malcolm X said it best we need to found our own political parties, then maybe our social ,economic and political needs might be addressed.

Just like when Black publications gave voice to those Blacks (and there were many) who was AGAINST the Civil Rights Movement and who HATED and I mean HATED DR.Martin Luther King Jr just as the many White folks did. Wow! Very strong comments! Where was Allen West when George W. Bush screwed the economy and the country? Why didn't he tell either Bush or Reagan to get the hell out of the US? Where does HE get off thinking that he has any more sense of entitlement to this country than Prez Obama, Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi to tell any one of them to leave? If he was truly telling them to take their ideas out of the USA, why didn't he give the same message to White Supremacists or other racists or Anti-Semitics to also take their ideas and "get the hell out of the USA?"

Although I am really not that politically educated nor involved but I do know one thing, this here thing is deeper than race. I truly believe that it nothing but a class struggle. I believe the "powers that be" are using people like Allen West and Herman Cain as a distraction. See, they know they can put out African-Americans like them to insult President Obama to get the rest of us Black folk riled up and emotional. Know what happens when humans are emotional? We fail to operate in the realm of the intellectual. That is "code red" territory for the "powers" because if we (meaning all the lower class people, not just Black people) start operating in the intellectual then we start paying attention and when we start paying attention we start realizing that as the lower class people, we actually have more in common that unites us than what separates us. Then if we were to start uniting, we become dangerous to them and their hidden agenda.

Same thing with Newt Gingrich and his inflammatory comments about Black people. These Republicans are NOT stupid, they know what to say in order to push emotional buttons with Black people and play off the emotions of White people by putting the propaganda out there that all Black people want to do is live off welfare. If they can keep the people of the lower classes fighting with one another, we are not uniting. This "man" Allen West is just another one of their devices to keep us distracted.

I thought Clarence Thomas was the last of that breed of old style, c___, Uncle Tom who does massas bidding but they are now breeding like cockroaches. Juan Williams, Herman Cain, Michael Steele and Allen West. They all have no pride, dignity and self respect. The Republican party has shown that it will be using the Southern strategy to win white votes so this makes it all the more disgraceful that there are still black apologists doing their dirty work.

If you want to talk logic, IR marriages are actually illogical, they produce children that are different from both parents and neither parent can identify with what the child's experiences will be, the kid will then have two different cultures to chose which one to identify with.
Not only that, the child has no one he can call his people, no ancient roots, no history, no claims to any historical land, he will also be rejected by many people on both his parents side of the family, and if he was ever in a race war he could be killed by whichever side he choses to fight with!...

Have you noticed that whenever someone uses phrases like "love has no colour" etc it's always directed towards black people? I was reading on another blog, where someone mentioned that it's always blacks who are expected to "transcend race" and it's true. Take the South Asians in the UK for example. Now everybody knows they very rarely date or marry out, yet I don't see anyone telling them they should "break down race barriers" - I don't see anyone telling British Asian women they need to "cast their nets wider" in order to find a mate, yet it's pushed towards us like nobody's business! I'm glad more black people are waking up and smelling the coffee though.

Now the whole mixed race thing plays into white movie producers ( mainly white men ) promoting themselves. So they can say," she's a pretty Black woman BUT she's part white or NOT all Black." @islandgirl10 Coming to America and BOOMERANG were great examples of showcasing beautiful Black women in a big Hollywood film.First off to your point, this was during the late 80's and early 90's. White producers had not seen the full impact of Black beauty competing with the European beauty standard. Also these two films were controlled by a BLACK MAN and Hollywood powerhouse,Eddie Murphy, who had a lot of clout in Hollywood back then and could oversee the casting.

Many Blacks are disgusted by the aggressive propaganda campaign to malign Black people in various ways. The Black consumer,like all other races, will buy whatever is available just to be entertained. This is documented in the new book called "The New Jim Crow," which is authored by the Sister Michelle Alexander) that is the origin of a lot of our problems in the first place. The Maafa, and Jim Crow caused many issues in our land. The psychological pain among some blacks have its origin from those 2 evil parts of human history.

So, yes we expose poverty and degeneracy. Yes, we should inspire our community to be better. Although, I won't tell a bootless man to get up by their own bootstraps. They need some boots first. Not to mention that I will not issue collective blaming among all poor blacks for the stuff that we witness today (for many corporate forces have contributed to record inequality in the world not the poor). The super rich collectively have done more degeneracy, crime, and overt evils than the poor would ever do.

A person expressing militant words is much better than members of the oligarchy executing deplorable, evil, and unjust deeds in real life. Lebron should have been so schooled on the implications of that imagery. Somehow we think if we don’t teach our children they will not be effected. But with regard to Dr. King to whom I've devoted a thread, you might check out GOD AND HUMAN DIGNITY: THE PERSONALISM, THEOLOGY AND ETHICS OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR by Dr. Rufus Burrows, Jr. Cornel West's PROPHESY DELIVERANCE may prove interesting. Interestingly enough, your philosopher compatriot Simone de Beauvoir makes some interesting observations on her encounter with African-American religion in Harlem. She was introduced to some Black churches, including that of Adam Clayton Powell, by her friend AA writer Richard Wright. Though herself an atheist, De Beauvoir was sympathetic to the religious expression she found in AA churches in Harlem, which she perceived as expressive of a peoples yearning for freedom. Check out AMERICA DAY BY DAY. Or rather, en version originale: L'Amerique au jour le Jour. Your AA teacher ought to introduce you to some of the churches in Bmore or parts further South. Or maybe I will if you happen to be here again and have time on your hands. Now here's an interesting tidbit of info: Dr. Richard McKinney, and elder philosophy professor with whom I once studied, knew Dr. King when King was still a young student of philososphy and theology. That was back in the 1940s when my PARENTS were young. Old McKinney died at age 99 in 2005. When I met Dr. Mckinney while I was still a teenager, I had not idea that this old black sage--the first true SAVANT and philosopher I was ever to meet in person--had known Dr. King when King was a teenager

Obama may as well simply take off the gloves and make war against the reactionaries under a progressive banner? But will he? He may get one more chance in November. If so, will he use it wisel???

Ron Paul does differ from Barry Goldwater in his distance from goldwater's robust militarism. I know that "colorblindness" is an easy and reliable strawman but this is nonsense.

The simple reason the GOP don't see anything wrong with their racist policies is because they are deeply racist, not because they are colorblind. Racism is deeply embedded in their ideology so that they hardly notice it. This is not the same as colorblindness, meaning someone who is oblivious to racial issues.

Your argument is based on the premise that society is not a reflection of the government's actions; that society changes irrespective of what is going on in the government. This is patently false. The reason "society became less racist" is not because of a gradual realization on the South's part that blacks were not inferior. It was as a result of the villanization of slaveholders and racists, made possible by the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments. Therefore, some infringement on property rights WAS in fact necessary to repeal the laws of slavery and Jim Crow. Moreover, society tends to swing back and forth between accepted behavior. With the possibility of excluding blacks still on the books, whites may decide later on that blacks are untouchables, and begin to re-frequent places with Whites Only signs. To assume that the current situation, which is a result of everything that you are arguing against, would be exactly the same had the past not occurred, is absurd. The market would only punish people from excluding patrons from restaurants, if it became viewed as unpopular and bad to do so. If it was popular, conversely, the market would not correct it.

That racism does not self-correct is evinced by the fact that slavery continued to exist as long as it did. If no infringement on property rights is necessary, then slavery would have continued into perpetuity. Southerners were resistant at the time of the Civil War, after the Civil War, and they continue to be resistant to the idea today. If slavery was not painted as an evil, the North would have gritted their teeth and bore it like they had been doing, because they were still getting rich as a result anyway. Further, the fact that racism does not self-correct is evinced by the fact that institutionalized racism is still a problem today, and whites continue to reap the benefits of it, whether they admit it or not. Institutionalized racism continues because the status quo is such a strong force to be reckoned with. A black man is still 50% less likely to get hired than a white man similarly situated. This, despite the fact that society has "become less racist."

I also argue that the proposed solutions do not give blacks a chance to voice their opinions to the government, but in fact take away blacks' agency in their own destiny and the way they are treated. Who can protest at a Whites Only drinking fountain? They know blacks will be angry; they just don't care. It takes white people to voice the opinion and refuse to drink at a water fountain or eat an establishment for stuff to change. This does not further the cause of the value in our society for our voices to be heard and for justice to prevail.

Both the Commerce Clause contained in Article I of the Founders’ Constitution as well as Section 5 of the Fourteenth Amendment plainly give Congress the power to ban racial discrimination by private businesses that run public accommodations. In 1964, in the landmark case of Heart of Atlanta Motel v. United States, the Supreme Court unanimously upheld the public accommodations provision of the 1964 Civil Rights Act under the Commerce Clause, pointing out that racial barriers thrown up by Jim Crow were hampering the free flow of interstate commerce. No Justice of the Supreme Court has ever questioned the correctness of Heart of Atlanta’s holding, including Justice Thomas, who has long urged the Court to dramatically cut back on the recognized reach of the Commerce Clause. For good reason, Heart of Atlanta is a foundational part of our law. Congress must have substantial power to forbid commercial practices – such as racial discrimination – that hinder free trade of goods and services.

Just as important, Heart of Atlanta’s holding that Congress has the power to prohibit racial discrimination by businesses that operate places of public accommodation finds deep support in the text and history of the Fourteenth Amendment. In fact, two Justices in Heart of Atlanta specifically concurred to explain that the Fourteenth Amendment gave Congress the power to enact the public accommodation provisions of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

In fact, South Carolina's justification for secession found in the official document "Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union", argued for states' rights for slave owners in the South, but contained a complaint about states' rights in the North in the form of opposition to the Fugitive Slave Act, claiming that Northern states were not fulfilling their federal obligations under the Constitution. All the alleged violations of the rights of Southern states were related to slavery.

By far, the claim that the Civil War was over the issue of States Rights, or in your words "federalism" is by far the weakest non-slavery justification. As Historian James McPherson puts it:

"While one or more of these interpretations remain popular among the Sons of Confederate Veterans and other Southern heritage groups, few professional historians now subscribe to them. Of all these interpretations, the state's-rights argument is perhaps the weakest. It fails to ask the question, state's rights for what purpose? State's rights, or sovereignty, was always more a means than an end, an instrument to achieve a certain goal more than a principle."

Lincoln did say this, but it does not follow from this that slavery was not the cause of the war. Everything else in that paragraph you said was true, but your conclusion just doesn't follow from it. So, Lincoln wanted to preserve the Union from secession by the Southern States. The Southern States seceded in large part due to perceived threats to their institution of slavery and its economic and cultural impact (Just read the actual arguments and justifications by the South at the time! It's not hard to find.) For example, South Carolina seceded prior to Lincoln's inauguration primarily due to fear that Lincoln would stop the expansion of Slavery into new states, fating them to perpetual minority in the House of Representatives (This was a common complaint of the Southern States). This is simply what happened.

"So again, while Slavery was an issue and heated topic of the day and certainly played a role in the split of the states etc, it was NOT the actual reason the war was fought."

Slavery was the reason and justification for secession. Official documents explicitly say so. It's no conspiracy that virtually every academic historian agrees with me on this (Not just 5th grade Social Studies Teachers). The evidence is just overwhelming. The claim that slavery was not the main reason needs to be called out for what it is, historical revisionism.

I can't imagine it)
I don't think King would accept oppression in the name of religion. Islam as understood by Abdul Ghaffar Khan he might sympathize with as he sympathized with Buddhists in Vietnam fighting for the liberation of their country. Probably he'd be thrilled to see the Arab Spring, and tormented by the horrible massacres in Syria. But thrilled by the rapid spread of nonviolent revolutions in the Middle East, and by the nonviolent insurgency of labor in Wisconsin.
When asked after a lecture i gave on King at a university last year whether King would be marching in Egypt, I said he'd be marching in Wisconsin and talking about thow the struggles here agains injustice is the same struggle that's happening in Tunisia, Egypt and elsewhere. And even in his 80s, he would be with us in the Occupy Movement---would probably see it as the continuation of what he was trying to do with the Poor Peoples Campaign.
As for the issue of "minority rights", for King these were essentially HUMAN RIGHTS. Human rights wuuld not include the right to exploit children. After all, children are human beings

that's what i don't understand...if all things were truly equal we would see a more balanced representation of interracial coupes in ALL types of movies not just in the big budget Black movies and not just white women with Black men in mainstream movies.

Would hitch have been as successful as a romantic comedy with a white man and a filipino woman, would the media market it the way they marketed Hitch as a bw/hw? Would white women/white men be expected to continuously support movies that ignored white women as love interests for white men?...

If all things were equal, we would see a more balanced representation of interracial couples of all sorts and not just in the black movies...

i'm going to respond to her comment generally speaking, in the case of Red Tails I think its an issue of white washing history moreso than anything...but i'm going to speak moreso about the bias against black women in this response...

First of all to me (all things being equal) there is nothing "sinister," about a white woman/black man relationship... Just as there is nothing "sinister" about an asian woman/white man or black woman/ arab man or any other pairing...(btw why don't we see a more balanced representation of those couples)...?

What struck me about the posters comment was that (s)he stated that its understandable that there aren't enough depictions of functional black relationships, but then the assumption is that there's something sinister about depicting a Black man with a white woman.

My response to that is, if you can understand that the portrayal of positive Black relationships in the media is unbalanced compared to positive white and interracial Black male relationships, why would you assume that the issue is just with interracial relationships between ww/bm in it of itself?

To me that's just a way to overlook the fact that YOU DO know that the media is unfairly portraying Black women/Black men relationships and it's derailing from that fact. It is undeniable to me that Black women are not portrayed positively in the media, the last sucessful mainstream movies we've had about Black women were The Help and Precious...that should say something...both of those were fictional or warped stories of Black women as caretakers and mothers and interestingly in both films Black men were portrayed badly and so were Black women.

These fictional accounts have warped not only the perception of Black women, but of Black men and their relationships with Black women. In contrast, we see a diverse and wide range image of white women and white men in functional, loving relationships. We see positive films about white women (The Blind side) often. Yet, when they have a chance to tell a "TRUE STORY" about a positive Black woman, magically they erase Black women and put in a white woman to tell the story?...

There's nothing sinister about white women being with black men, but what is sinister is the misrepresentation and the erasure of Black women in the media, and the glorification of non-Black women as their "replacements."

I had this WW at work come up to me and start bad-mouthing BW out of the blue, about their sexual easiness. I'm like, WTF, does this fool know who she's talking to? So, I happily reminded her a___ about the pornography industry (mostly White) and those "Girls Gone Wild" videos. That ended that conversation because I guess she was feeling me out to see what kind of fool I WAS. We haven't talked since -- a good deal for my a___.
Bottom line, BM and BW are being MANIPULATED. Can't we see the strategy of divide and conquer? Don't we know this system is trying to destroy us? If you agree with that, how the hell can we pretend we don't need each other? Why aren't we seeing through the hype and asking oursevles why our relationships are always being portrayed through a negative lens? Of course, we need to hear all viewpoints but we should do that in the spirit of trying to understand each other, not to condemn each other.
Even if we don't date or marry IR we are still bringing this crazy a___ hateful s______ to our BLACK relationships.

Well...I don't recall that Sina said that Blacks are in control of the global economy. I think he DID say that that it's IRELEVANT that whites enslaved by Turks or Barbary traders were subject to racialized bondage. That I do find incredible. The racial caste systems whose effects are still with us in the Americas, had its origin in racial slavery. The superexploitation and dispossession of Blacks even TODAY, not to mention the racial injustices of the police and judiciary, would probably not exist had racialized slavery never happened. Even the difficulties in united Black and white poor workers--which I'd hope ALL we progressives desire and which Sina continuously emphasizes--would not be so problematic were it not for the racial caste that began in slavery and continued to deform social relations ever since. Dr. King rejected Communism. I think he was right on many thing. Also, Dr. King believed in the growth of black businesses and black community resources. Also, he isn't a Jewish zombie. If all government programs are evil, why was the Interstate highway, the interstate train system, and other likeminded programs have been successes. Government itself isn't the problem. Before Malcolm X died, he respect Dr. King for his fight for black people to gain voting rights in 1965. Malcolm X also supported the desegregation efforts in NYC. So, MLK and King were very similar in ideologies excluding nonviolence. I believe Malcolm X was more accurate than Dr. King on the question of nonviolence.

Black African people have been known to Poland for centuries. However, Poland's lack of colonies in Africa combined with the non-existence of slavery meant that the only Black people were free immigrants who came of their own will. Poland's strong economy, high Human Development Index, good infrastructure, and job opportunities to foreigners have been the driving force behind this new migration pattern. The majority of these new immigrants have come as refugees from Nigeria and Cameroon, as well as a small group of entertainers and entrepreneurs from the United States.

Since the fall of Communism in Poland, Black African footballers have started to establish themselves in the country. Notable amongst these Black African footballers is the Nigerian-born striker Emmanuel Olisadebe, who is a naturalised Pole and plays for the national team.

What a surprise, NOT. I called Chelsea Handler out when she went on that racist rant about Beyonce imitating a sista girl(rolling her neck and using ebonics). Most of the posters on this board and the blogs thought she was hilarious when she did that but I know a racist when I see one.

On the contrary--Black people are blamed by many uneducated racist white people for their hardships, although this country was brutally established to do nothing but favor whites and to spread racism against people of color, especially black people. This call for moral consistency is commendable, and not easy to adhere to. Even among we progressives it is tempting to drop our humanism and tolerance when it comes to some group we don't particularly like. With emperorjohn, the disliked group seems to be Latins, or at least "illegal aliens." Dr. King would have extended a hand of solidarity to those aliens; and like the Hebrew God who called for kindness and justice to the stranger, King would remind his people "Remember that YOU have been strangers and bondsmen in the land of Egypt." In some of his later speeches and writings he called upon religious leaders of the world--Christian, Jew, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist---to return to those universal life-affirming values to be found in every religious tradition, values which affirm the value of life and justice. He even extended his hand to atheists with whom he could never agree; and Marxists were also welcome in this Poor Peoples Campsign. If we are to create a more humane America and world, our solidaiity must be as inclusive as possible of the entire human family. This is what the Occupy Movement must be about.

Greetings, my Indian sister. The youths and their teacher arrested at the prison on MLK Day have been released. And they are full of spirit.
I chose not to speak at Occupy Baltimore on MLK Day because I felt inspired seeing so many young people--inner city kids--courageously finding their voices.
I did address Occupy Baltimore several hours ago. We were Black, white, Latin, Muslim, jew, Christian and probably atheist (since two persons I saw there I know to be Marxists).
The name of a certain Yancy emitted from the mouths of one of the Black college students, and I emailed Yancy to let him know this. I even heard referenced a few published words of my own.
Our movement is on the move. And if anyone seeks to divide us, he or she is an enemy of the Movement.
These special actions which kicked on Martin Luther King Day will continue through January 21. On Friday, the 99% Movement will descend upon the courts here in Bmore, and some in Washington where black hooded idiots and sycophants of corporate power have decided to confer "personhood" on corporations, and to give big money unlimited sway in the influencing and corrupting of American political life. We can beat the plutocracy.

I do recall that Coretta Scott King spoke out in defense of the rights of gays even though that issue was not even a blip on the radar screen when Dr. King was with us. Coretta also restrained one of her daughters, I believe Bernice, who tried to use her father's name in right wing anti-gay movements. Coretta made it clear that she could not use her father's name in any "hate the gays" campaign. Coretta pointed out that Dr. King never ostracized anybody. Would he have developed sympathy for the gay Movement? Who knows? Probably he would favor equal rights for gays, though I'm not sure whether he could go as far as gay marriage. He would certainly be a voice of protest against anti-gay discrimination and anti-gay violence. And he would probably point out, as do many PROGRESSIVE ministers do now, that even the Bible has more denunciations of oppression of the poor than denunciations of gay activity. And King would certainly call out those Black ministers who are full of self-righteous outrage over gays, but are silent when it comes to social justice for their own community. He would call out those Negro preachers who are always railing about personal moral infractions, but not about massive social injustice. He would call out those ministers in Baltimore who are silent about the prison facilities being constructed for our youth, and the shutting down of our schools or the outsourcing of our jobs. He would call out those those who wax eloquent about some golden paradise in the great beyond, while ignoring the hellish conditions of social misery in this life. And he would probably counsel his fellow minister to come from behind the stain glass security of their churches, and join the admittedly dangerous and difficult struggle of real human beings which is advancing forward through the bold resistance of the Occupy Movement.

I've progressive white--or Jewish--colleague in Philosophy who's also in the Occupy Movement. Like me, he's a democratic socialist. LIke Wat, he's an atheist. He's very much into Buddhism, as well as sharing my interest in existential philosophy and phenomenology. I am beginning to study eastern philosophy, but have a long way to go. Dr. King had begun engaging some Buddhist revolutionary leaders in Vietnam as he increased his own involvement in opposition to the war. I mentioned to you earlier that while King was deeply rooted in Christianity, he also called upon people of all religions--Christi an, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu--to re-commit to those life affirming values which are universal to all major religions, and which affirm the dignity of human life. A little known part of King's thinking was to encourage an ECUMENICAL religious (as well as religious/secular) alliance and movement for peace. That is what I have in mind at this time. Also, Erich Fromm--of Dr. King's favorite thinkers in Psychology--also advocated for the resurgence of humanistic values found in common both religious and secular humanists. Though an atheist of Marxian and Freudian orientation, Fromm emphasized liberatory humanistic values. As a Marxist, he was most interesting in the philosophical humanism of the early Marx. But he also argued for a NONVIOLENT Movement to achieve a humanistic, decnetralized socialism, Some have described him as a "religious atheist." LOL! Of course, Dr. King sees quite a bit of the Hebrew prophet in Marx.

It seems those measures have been defeated. The fight isn't over, but at least that threat to our first amendment rights has been pushed back. This happened because of POPULAR PRESSURE. People power forced the Congress to back down. To his credit, Obama also opposed SOPA & PIPA, although he initially remained quiet. Whither Obama? Yes, the corporate powers worry that freedom of expression will make the internet a instrument of popular democratic movement. We've already seen it here with the Occupy Movement which has first swept America, and then the world. We've seen it with the Arab Spring. But King thought of Goldwater, and Goldwater's conservatism, as out of touch with reality(p.247). On matters of race King thought of Goldwater (an oppoent of civil rights act of 1964) what I thought of Ron Paul (before learning of his racist articles):
"While not himself a racist, Mr. Goldwater articulated a philosophy which gave aid and comfort to the racist. His candidacy and philosophy would serve as an umbrella under which extremists of all stripes would stand." (p247)
King noted at THAT TIME, while the trend was in its EARLY STAGES, the flocking of KKK and segregationist white supremacist Dixiecrats to the banner of Barry Goldwater.
We see the same economic philosophy in Republican party today, and we see much of the same racism, though CODED to suit the sensibilities of our post-1960s era. Juan Williams, a black conservative got a taste of that recently.

Now, you claim that free market capitalism was the strongest instrument that brought down poverty more than any instrument known to man. That is of course very false, because never in American history (or world history) that we have a financial system free from all government intervention. President George Washington supported federals funds for canals. Eisenhower used federal dollars to build up our interstate highway system and President Kennedy used government money to fund NASA, pro-union policies, and foreign aid. That is antithetical to the totally laissez faire capitalist system. What works is a mixed economy (that promotes private enterprise, legitimate regulations, and public services too). That works. You list certain nations, which is slick my fellow. The government can’t solve every problem, but the government can be used as an instrument for improvements. Humans can show compassion without the state, but that doesn’t mean the government is left out of the equation. Not to mention that labor rights, civil rights, environmental protection, and other benefits in our land aren’t representative of free market capitalism at all.

Although, you conveniently omit the pro-social democratic nations of Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, etc. that have strong public resources to help their citizens out. They aren’t following Austrian economics. Much of their health, education, GDP, and human development index are better than America's indicators of its standard of living. It was the federal government spending money to end the Great Depression. It was federal involvement that contributed to the decline of the poverty rate in the USA in half from 1960 to 1970 as well. Smaller government doesn’t work in every case to help a kid to pay for student loans or to solve interstate issues. I believe that the government shouldn’t control every aspect of society. I believe the government should protect our liberties. I just believe that the government should promote the general welfare of the people. Your pro-oligarchy positions are really about socialism for the rich and cartel-capitalism for the poor.

You believe that corporations alone or private interests alone can solve poverty. I don't. I believe in both private and public avenues to solve poverty. I never written that the federal government should regulate all matters. You are putting words in my mouth again. You believe that the federal government should bomb sovereign nations under a false pretext and that the federal government should activate austerity to harm poor citizens.

The tools to solve poverty include investments, a jobs program, help for poor citizens, the rejection of austeriy, better education, better health, mentorships, and other common sense actions.

You know, there's an article by an American historian which suggests that Europophobia (if I can invent a word) among Americans is found MAINLY among white American conservatives.
Some people of color have ambivalent, or hostile attitudes towards Europe. But they have a history of being colonized, enslaved and exploited by Europeans.
My suspicions is that animosity toward Europe by whites who are descendants of Europeans, is mainly xenophobia and fear of the more PROGRESSIVE features of European democratic polities. And among peoples of color, it is precisely the experience of REPRESSION, an experiences of the REACTIONARY features of European society that provokes animosity or suspicions.
When Frantz Fanon, who was very popular with AA revolutionaries in the 1960s, wrote "Let us turn from this Europe that is never done talking of MAN, but kill MEN wherever they find them"--he was speaking as a colonized person. It was not progressive social legislation that he experienced, but repressive colonial violence. AA who (as Malcolm, Panthers and others pointed out) experienced something similar to colonialism, could find much in Fanonian critique of Europe which resonated with their own experience of oppression.
But conservative white Americans are not responding to experience of racist degradation and imperial exploitation at the hands of Europe. It is mainly xenophobia and what one hist''orian called the "politics of paranoia."

Am I mistaken, or is the distrust or dislike of Europe more pronounced among white American conservatives?

I recall that in right wing opposition to health care reform one common refrain was that Obama and the liberals are trying to turn America into another Europe.

They complain that liberals are trying to impose a European "nanny state" upon America.

The British are often seen as snooty (even if alllies), and the French as effete.

Indeed Europe as a whole is often seen as "effete," not so "virile" as America.

I don't seem to hear this same contempt for Europe among more liberal American whites.

Some to the left of liberalism do see Europe as now a junior league player in the game of imperialism.

And African-Americans often recall that Europe created the slave trade and colonized Africa. But that is a different kind of dispute with Europe than that of white American conservative.

Two replies: 1. You need to offer evidence of Rev. Jeremiah Wright's racism. I don't recall any words of his likening whole peoples to "zoo animals." 2. You need to show which of Obama's writings reveal evidence of racism as does the writings attributed to Ron Paul. Indeed, if you READ Obama's memoir--DREAMS FROM MY FATHER--you will find that Obama often thought that much of social wrongs which Wright attributed to racism, Obama thought more connected to CLASSISM, though Obama acknowledges the persistence of racism. I think the Iowa governor believes that Obama wants to make America to be more like social democratic countries in Europe. That's probably what he meant when he said Obama wants to turn America into another Europe.
When one talks about social legislation, or what the French call "protections sociale", Europe is viewed with disdain by some American whites. When they want to celebrate Western civilization, or America's Western heritage, then Europe is often glorified as the birthplace of the greatest culture of all.
Of course, the philosophical foundations of American notions of liberty and government come mainly from Europe; from England most of all, and secondarily at least from France.
Whole sections of the Declaration of Independence paraphrase John Locke's SECOND TREATISE ON CIVIL GOVERNMENT. And our idea of "division of powers" partly derive from Montesquieu's SPIRIT OF THE LAWS.

He folds so easily perhaps because he believes that is how you show unity to the nation -- by avoiding divisive battles. In his own mind, he probably calculates that he is "bridging the divide" and "forging a bipartisan consensus."

People who *COULD BE* dynamic community activists by virtue of their progressivism combined with independent wealth, ability and talent -- think Michael Moore -- would have to step to the forefront and rally others around them. The corporate elites and lobbyists who've made their fortunes in Wall Street finance or pharmaceuticals or defense contracting are NOT going to do it for us.

I think that Obama's background as a community activist, which he repeatedly trumpeted during the campaign, is essentially fake and was used to hoodwink the leftist-progressive wing of the Democrats. If not fake, then it's nothing more than a distant memory which is totally irrelevant to his current outlook in life -- sort of like the one-time "radical anarchist" in college, who then graduates, throws away the spray-paint cans and army fatigues, cleans up, and then goes to work at his uncle's investment bank. LOL!

Unless things quickly change as part of some unknown, crafty "Master Plan" of Obama's, we will have tough times ahead of us with this meek, bourgeois, corporatist of a black President.

I speak of the richer foreign nations because they are the only ones with which a reasonable or fair analogy can be made. When rightists talk about how much better life is in America than elsewhere they usually point to poorest countries, or to some kind of dictatorship.
And when you hear rightists referring to Europe as a basket caes, they shrewdly point to Greece, not Germany or Denmark.
I have a right to ask why America doesn't do as well in many ways as countries more similar to ourselves in wealth and economic development.
Many white Americans do despise Europe, and take their own ancestral homeland as a symbol of what is negative. Given their negative attitude toward Obama, the animosity toward reinforces (by association) the animosity toward the other. When he's not called a Muslim, he's called a commie (within the context where Europe is seen as commie or socialist).

Actually, Attai's post # 1194 give a number of reasons why social democracy, or the welfare state if you prefer, should be preferred. I might mention that in those societies the quality of education and health care are HIGHER and the costs actually lower. While no environment is totally safe, Western Europe has FAR LESS violent crime. Maybe because there's a substnatial measure of economic security, personal and political freedom, and space for a rich cultural life. And America;s new health care package (Obamacare is merely a buzz word) is problematic only insofar as it's too watered down. If Obama had a stiff progressive backbone he'd have proposed SWEEEPING REFORMS, sincle payer, and the end to corporate domination of health care. Bu the way, College is NOT FREE for very low income people. I grew up in the ghettoes of east Baltimore. It didn't come free for me, and i had a neumber of years to pay off loans. However, I've read not only in DREAMS FROM MY FATHER but also from magazines like THE PROGRESSIVE and THE NATION that Obama REALLY was involved in community organization on behalf of the poor in Chicago, and also student activism on campus. He really moved in circles of Black and Hispanic student activists, Marxist professors, feminists, labor and so forth. But even THEN he was known as PRAGMATISTS; and pragmatists tend to be CENTRISTS even when on the LEFT. But now Obama's barely even on the left, and basically just a centrist--not right wing,but clearly not more than MODERATELY liberal.
Frankly, even liberalism is too mild for me. You already know that I'm a democratic sociaiist. I don't expect Obama to be a libertarian socialist. But he could at least be a FIGHTING LIBERAL!!! Otherwise, the Right will walk all over him and US; and Obama will have squandered a great historical opportunity.

The 99% Movement is a growing popular democratic movement for economic justice. It is a movement opposed to the concentration of wealth of the corporate plutocracy. I support occupy movement. Yet, I feel poverty and unemployment is not just the real problem in black community.

In US blacks are systematically discriminated and decimated by new drug laws after slavery and Jim crow. The statistics suggest that drug laws are just NEW Jim crows(in mask) because 90% of black men are jailed for non-violent crime like possessing small amount of drug for personal use. Also, only 5% of white for similar crimes are send to jail. Rest are just send to counseling whereas blacks are send to prison. Some even for 5 years.

Statistics also suggest that there are more blacks in jail compared to the number of slaves in the height of slavery. Once you get arrested irrespective of you getting convicted or not, your chances of landing in good employment, housing or any govt services is NEGLIGIBLE. This drug law or NEW Jim crow Laws have created a NEW system of labor who can be hired without paying minimum wage and benefits.

Anyone want REAL social change should protest against NEW Jim Crow. May be it's time for us to ask if we've real democracy FOR ALL ?

Nigeria has three refineries, all owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, NNPC. The Nigerian government has announced its intention to sell 51% of each of the refineries in 2004.

Kaduna refinery in northern Nigeria was built in 1980 with a capacity of 5.5 million mt/yr (110,000 b/d). A Lube Baseoil plant was added in 1982, and an LAB plant in 1987.
Warri refinery in the south central region was built in 1978 with a capacity of 6.2 million mt/yr (125,000 b/d). A Carbon Black plant and a Polypropylene plant were added in 1986.
Port Harcourt refinery in the southeast is made up of two refineries, built in 1965 and 1989. In 1993 they were merged into one, with a total capacity of 10.500 million mt/yr (210,000 b/d). The Eleme Petrochemical plant, which was built adjacent to the Port Harcourt refinery in 1995, has an Olefin production capacity of 483,000 mt/yr, a Polypropylene capacity of 80,000 mt/yr and a Polyethylene production capacity of 250,000 mt/yr.

Pan-Africanism by the contrary is growing outside and within the continent. I can point to Zimbabwe, Malema, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Sudan, Congo, Brazil, the U.S.A.,etc. all filled with young and old Black people who are marching forward and realizing who their enemies are: white, arab and asain. I am not buying into the de-racializing of this situation. There is a big difference between being priced out of an area or being removed from it by being jailed for years on trumped charges. Whites are not targeted by so-called stop and frisk tactics, Blacks, and to a lessor degree, Latinos are. Jail time in this country makes one a permanently unemployable paraiah who cannot even vote in many states. It also makes one unable to support a family, thus making others vulnerable to being sucked into and victimized by other arms of the system. This article brings up a good point about how the Black Panthers' Social Prog [IE: medical & breakfast for school kids prog] is not as often studied, analyzed, or even noted- as their more so-called 'militant / radical' political positions.

The Late Chairman of Chicago's Black Panthers- Fred Hampton, was well known in Chicago, before his notorious assassination on Dec 4 1969 by the hands of the FBI & CPD, for the Chicago Black Panthers' Breakfast program for poor Black school kids. In fact prior to the FBI / CPD hit on Hampton, CPD raids on Chicago Black Panther offices specifically targeted- confiscated &/or destroyed food stocks that Hampton's Chicago Panthers had obtained specifically for their Breakfast for Chicago school kids prog.

The stereotype of blacks being "genetically" violent is bashed by the fact that the African civilization of Mali abhorred violence. And the infamous stereotype I hear all of the time that blacks are ignorant is immediately dismissed by the fact that blacks made some of the most intricate and well constrructed civilizations in history, and created Timbuktu the educational center of that time period that held thousands of books filled with all types of information on math and sciences for black students. And all of these facts together destroy the most notorious black stereotype of all; that blacks have no history and they contributed nothing to society. We are really doing ourselves a disservice in not learning our true worth and potential on this great Earth. What I'm trying to say is if our African ancestors who come from a time without modern technology can create and develop these great structures and keep honorable values, we most definantely should be able to pull our true potential and lead ourselves out of this perpetual state of oppression. So my question to you is how do you think blacks can tap into this potential that our ancestors displayed outwardly and gave them some of the greatest civilizations on Earth? How do we hel pother blacks realize that without our history to show us that we can be better than we will fall for the same traps? andhow do we get our young people interested in these things?

In my opinion, America was born and conceived in racism: from slavery, to the near annihilation of the American Indian, to the subtle biasness of the political climate of today. Moreover, racism continues to exist as a form of cultural and socioeconomic segregation in our country. Due to the inherent nature of racism, we as a people have unfortunately become somewhat desensitized concerning such issues.

But let us not be misled. Politicians that make racist comments do so because they are racist. I also believe that racist politicians do not necessarily perceive themselves as racist, despite their apathetic remarks about minorities—former Alabama governor; Governor George Wallace didn’t view himself as a racist either.

On account of the high degree and excessiveness of racist remarks, bias implication, and insinuations of bigotry that has come out of the mouths of Republican and Tea Party politicians since President Obama was elected, I cannot help but wonder whether I am the only one with this opinion.

Genetic tests carried out by British scientists have revealed that many of the Lemba tribesmen in southern Africa have Jewish origins, according to a report by the BBC. They say the ark was built almost 700 years ago from the remains of the original ark, which according to the Bible was used to store the Ten Commandments. For decades, the ancient vessel was thought to be lost until it was discovered in a storeroom in Harare recently.

Members of the priestly clan of the Lemba, the Buba – which is one of 12 clans – have a genetic element also found among the Jewish priestly line, known as Kohanim. As late as the 1960s, REpublicans (who won the majority of Black votes when they were more left of center than Democrats) were capable of winning 20--30% of Black vote.
And yes, most African-Americans--despite our deplorable cultural conservatism--are at least moderately liberal, and often left of liberal in political and economic values and philosophies.
If we were 80% of the population, and with basically the same political values, America might look more like Scandinavia...one of those "nanny states" whose quality of life and education and health care on average is well above the level of the USA.
Unfortunately, until the improved education had time to take its affect, we might also have school prayer and restrictions on such matters a gay rights, or at least gay marriage.
But after a generation, a better educated population would outgrow such prejudices also.
But the slave mentality which allows many poor and middle class whites to vote for their ENEMIES--for example, those working class whites who voted for Scott Walker only to have their collective bargaining rights abolished--that is a toxic and self-destructive attitude very hard to break. Some of them may even vote for Walker BECAUSE of those racist articles, just as some white supremacists voted for Goldwater BECAUSE of his opposition to civil rights.

Beyonce is a smart and deep woman. She finished high school like most entertainers. Most of them didn’t go to college, either. I remember reading an article about her and it talked about how she went to an art museum to look at photographs of the Civil Rights movement. I remember reading that some fans saw Beyonce and her mom in a bookstore, and they were buying history books. But a reasonable equality is an idea of most progressives whether liberal or far left. How much is reasonable is open to debate. Your right. What was once a positive medium used to uplift black conciousness has been defiled. There are two options, boycott modern rap and teach our kids about what it has become and why they shouldn't confide in it, while at the same time giving them better alternatives or let the music keep making a mockery of everything blacks have worked for. Notice how these minstrel rappers perpetuate the violent thug stereotype of black men and the women perpetuate the jezebel, they must know what they're doing.

What the people of the Middle East are showing through their democratic insurgency is that PEOPLE POWER is often stronger than political or economic power, that "soul force" (as King like to call it) can overpower physical force, and (as the Panthers used to say) "the spirit of the people is stronger than the oppressor's technology."
We are still exploring ways of bringing that truth to the fore. Unfortunately, the distractions of a score of clowns in this thread is contributing nothing to our efforts.

But now the system seems to produce more wealth without labor than with it, making work and workers increasingly irrelevant. The old industries disappear, actual production of things is displaced by financial wheeling and dealing. Wall Street pirates enrich themselves while pillaging the nation and the globe.
But the average person can only earn a living by means of "jobs", work that's being eliminated or exported abroad (allowing cheaper labor, lower wages). But if people can't earn they also can't buy, and so capitalism may be cutting its own throat.
Now as human lives are destroyed by this system, there will be a reaction. But what kind? Will popular energies be captured in a right wing fascist movement? A violent revolution? AA NONVIOLENT REVOLUTION? For me, the most desirable alternative would be a NONVIOLENT REVOLUTION, if possible. The LEAST DESIRABLE would be a FASCIST America, which is also quite possible.
But it is clear that things cannot go on as before.

Yet the electronic technology, which has basically rendered labor superfluous, also holds open possilities of new dimensions of FREEDOM in a post-capitalist cooperative society. In a democratic, cooperative society in which the wealth and technology serve human needs rather than corporate profits and elite political interests, a measure of abundance and and leisure could be available to the entire population.

Not only freedom from want, from economic and political oppression, but freedom FOR human social and peraonal actualization can become the universal birhright of every man, woman and child on earth.
A richer cultural life would be possible. A REAL democracy may be possible for the first time in human history.

I do not say that this is inevitable. I merely say that it is POSSIBLE.
And that it may be achievable by a nonviolent revolutionary movement.

What has REVOLUTION to do with appeasing the oppressor? The latter day MLK was thinking in terms of fighting IMPERIALISM and CAPITALISM. He was drawing connections between racism and exploitation, and between the struggle against colonialism at home, the the struggle abroad.
At one level the issue of violence vs nonviolence is overly simplstic, but is also a question (at least in part) of METHODS.
At any rate, King wasn't slain because he appeased the oppressor. People who appease the oppressor (like Clarence Thomas) are rewarded.

When you ponder only the obstacles and not the possibilities, you defeat yourself from the beginning. Human beings are capable of more than they know. And if everything is not possible, it is only in the STRUGGLE itself that we discover what is possible and what isn't. We must INVENT the revolution, not give ourselves all sorts of reasons why it can't happen. Every tyranny in history which people have sought to end seemed invincible at one time.
The power of American slaveholders seemed immovable. But it was moved. Many people thought that the seemingly impregnable "Militant South" was immovable. But in the 1950s & 60s it was moved.
Even if we considered armed revolutions, the king in France and other lands seemed invincible once. Yet the monarchy fell. Defiance of British rule in America seemed madness to many, as Britain was then the mightiest nation on earth. Imagine Bolivia taking on the USA...or better imagine Vietnam defying America? Impossible? No more so said leaders of the Vietnamese Revolution than your Washington or Jefferson defying England.
I want to suggest that conditions may be ripe, or ripening, for a global revolution against racial, class, and patriarchal oppression; against social and political tyranny. And maybe for the first time in history a NONVIOLENT global revolution is possible.
I don't say that I KNOW this to be the case any more than the insurgents of 1776, or the defiant community in Montgomery in 1955, could be certain of victory. But if we don't make the effort we defeat ourselves before we start.
And if everyone is not "down" for the revolution, than let's begin uniting with all who are.

Good morning. I got about an hour befor I head back to the compus. I see you guys are still at it.
But I think it's kind of odd to WITNESS nonviolent revolutionary movements now sweeping the Middle East, and then read that there's no struggle. I don't thinkk those insurgents are appeasing the oppressors, oppressors whose goons attack the insurgents with bullets and molotov cocktails.
Of course, we can't know how this will turn out. And it turn out differently in different countries--differently in Egypt than in Yemen or Jordan.
But isn't that the same with VIOLENT revolutions. When rebels in a then underdeveloped land of thirteen English colonies presumed they could take of might of England---the no. 1 supperpower of the era---many observers thought the American revolutionaries to be mad.
And there was no way of knowing THEN, that the whole thing might failed and the leaders executed.
It could have ended en defeat like the 1848 revolutions. The same with the French Revolution of 1789, or the Russian Revolution of 1917.
If there is a desire to EVOLVE, then that may mean re-inventing the Revolution itself. Is it not possible that a NONVIOLENT revolutionary process is itself an EVOLVING MOVEMENT FORWARD?
If the old methods of violence can be replaced by newer and evolving methods of nonviolent social transformation, this may indicate a higher level of human devdlopment, freedom and civilization itself.
Do I KNOW that this is will happen? Of course not. Not any more than previous pioneers knew.
But with all the depression stagnations and bloody setbacks of history, history also is a story of humankinds great forward advances and the overcoming of barriers?
A world without hunger, tyranny, violence and war? Laughable some say....
Cynics once that the a world not ruled by absolute monarchs was laughable daydreaming...a world without slaves? Impossible, thought the eminent Aristotle. Impossible thought the slaveholders and many non-slaveholders in America.

Malcolm X came to Smethwick during his visit to Britain because it had come to symbolise racism in Britain. In the 1964 General Election the Conservative MP Peter Griffiths had won the seat of Smethwick allegedly using racist campaigning. It was widely reported that stickers with the slogan "If you want a n***** for a neighbour vote Liberal or Labour" had been distributed by his supporters. The victory and the views of Griffiths prompted the Prime Minister Harold Wilson to describe him as a "parliamentary leper". In December 1964 Conservative members of the local council asked the council's housing department to buy any houses that became vacant on Marshall Street to prevent black families moving in. A plan which the council agreed to implement early in 1965. Malcolm X had been a spokesman for the Nation of Islam but had left in 1964. On February 21 1965 Malcolm X was shot dead in New York by members of the Nation of Islam with FBI having an underhand in it.

Nearing Smethwick has seen riots these days.

Some say that we can't win. Once, people said that American slavery would continue forever. These people were wrong. Some people said that Jim Crow segregration would last forever. These people were wrong. Others said that a black man (regardless of what you think of him) can never be President or the First Lady of America could never be a beautiful, strong, and highly intelligent sister. Of course, these folks were wrong. If in a period of less than a century, we can witness the end Jim Crow and allow a black family to be inside of the White House, then we can certainly make the black community much stronger than ever before.

Whites love to go to africa and learn our dances and stuff and we are welcoming, but the other way around it is not as pleasant for us. Non-blacks do love to steal our culture. Where's the articles that give statistics about increases in police murders of unarmed black males, excessive force cases, and profiling compliants?

It seemed that police abuses increased after President Obama was elected - as if some cops were angry a black man became President, so they started to take their anger out on black people.

We should never forget: Because a police officer is given a legal right, the benefit of the doubt, conservative community support for, & weapons for commiting violence - being a cop is a GREAT job, for a guy that is sadistic anyway. Right?

You completely misunderstood my video. The point that I was trying to make was that that there is no point on black men hating on the thugs, because society doesn't really differentiate between the two anyway. In my opinion, brothers shouldn't even WORRY about how some other black man may look to other people, and just worry about THEMSELVES.
Most people can already tell, most of the time, the good black men from the bad ones, it's just that they don't CARE either way.

Simply not true. Ron Paul voted against it, and I've been against it from the start as well.

It is true that many republicans did such. I got called liberal on a daily basis, and that was one of the nicer things I got called. But to say that Ron Paul and everyone who supports him believes this is just flat out false.

Also, many people have thankfully waken up to the fact we were lied to and so on. But I guess rather than being happy about this, you would rather persecute them for a political agenda.
