By: crammasters on 5/30/2011 12:00PM Neutral Any article ABOUT black people -- be it unemployment or education -- that does NOT mention RACISM, is fairly useless in my opinion. WE (black people) cannot afford to pretend that we live in a "post-racial" america just because of one election -- which hasn't done a thing for blacks collectively. We cannot afford to pretend that racism is not the MAJOR FACTOR in our quality of life for the black collective — which includes having a job that pays a living or better wage. I know it's fashionable to believe racism is "going away" or that IR dating is "hip" or whatever mindlessness that is promoted by the mainstream media, BUT those of us who are thinking, logical people know better. Many of the black folks on the UNEMPLOYMENT LINE are educated, college-degreed, and have years of job experience, so it will take more than just packing up and moving to a place with a smaller black population to overcome what it means to be black in a racist society. Actually, I would advise against that move for two reasons: 1) as the economy continues to decline (and I believe it's important to be honest with ourselves about that), then being a black speck in a vast pool of white buttermilk may not be the SAFEST OPTION. 2) Spreading the black population thin dilutes our potential power. What we should be doing -- in my opinion -- is taking advantage of our NUMBERS by ADMITTING that TRUTH: that racism -- not education or table manners -- is the MAJOR FACTOR in the deteriorating quality of life for black people collectively in this nation (and always has been).
At that point we MUST decide it's a case of do or die -- meaning we MUST develop our own economic/business bases that allows us to (1) produce what we need, (2) provide services to our communities, (3) to sell what we produce to each other and recirculate our dollars, and (4) to EMPLOY OURSELVES AND EACH OTHER. Of course I know this will take a lot of work, time, patience and endurance - because we will be opposed by those who want to see us remain helpless and childless and DEPENDENT, but we really have no choice. We will have to be determined to UNLEARN centuries of forced dependence but we are CAPABLE people once we set our minds to it. We can complete with anyone once we set our minds to it and our history proves that. We have overcome the kinds of odds that no other group has EVER faced -- once we set our minds to it. Remember 'Black Wall Street' where freed SLAVES right after slavery built an entire, independent, all black town with it's own bus line, library, and theater? If you've never heard of it, you need to google it, as well as learning about the over 50 all black towns that once existed in the state of Oklahoma.
We must get away from this "gotta find a job" mentality AND move toward "gotta get OUT of this job mentality," with a quickness because as long as we have to go rely on companies that either won't hire us, won't pay us fairly, or will fire us unfairly -- especially in a bad economy -- we will be having this same discussion on black unemployment a few years from now -- only the numbers will be higher. It's time for a game changer, brothers and sisters, while we still in the game.

This is a very good example of the fact that "the amount of pigment in your skin" does not dictate the amount of brains you have. The woman clearly does not identify with the "African American" struggles in this country, she nor her parents were here during the civil rights movement so I see her as being no different than some other immigrants to this country. That reap the benefits of the movement without even knowing they have.
You get here, you are helped by the system, struggles of the civil rights movement, and then you try and say you made it all on your own. Does she really understand that there was a time in this country and in her own religion she could not even have married her husband.

Reading this article, I had to laugh on soooo many parts of it that I barely finished it. Okay, so let's take this apart. 1) Being of Haitian decent, I can't understand why she's konservative, especially when you take into account what a konservative Amerikan government did to her ancestors when they kick the France's a$$ off their half of that island. For those of you who don't know, Amerika was so afraid that the slaves here would hear about what happened there that they decided to embargo Haiti. Nothing came out, and nothing went in. The embargo was so bad, they had to invade the Dominican Republic just to have access to the basic things. 2) Considering the Mormon's historic stance towards "Black" people, I can't for the life of me, understand why anyone of African decent would follow that religion. I know, I know, they changed their mind about that in 1978. But you can't wipe away decades of bigotry in only 34 years. 3) She's going to join the CBC, so that she can take it apart from the inside? So, she's going to succeed where Col. West, I mean Lt. Col West has miserably failed? She's been reading too much of her own press. Lastly, konservatives like to bump their gums about limited government, but when you turn around its konservative government that sticks its nose into the lives of everyday Amerikans. It regulates who can and cannot get married, its trying to regulate a woman's womb and her right to privacy and when it comes to deficit spending, konservatives wrote the book. Lastly, konservatives like to say that 44 got elected because he is a "Black" looking dude. They never seem to take into consideration that 44 was a better choice than that failure of a fighter pilot and that idiotic twist from the great white north. They also cite his exoticism. Well, there's nothing more exotic than a "Black", Mormon, konservative from Utah. I wonder how many of them will vote for her because of ethnicity?

The idea that we express our diversity in "other facets of society except for politics" is another sign of your ignorance. I come from a family of Black conservatives. Black American conservatives have existed as long as White ones have been around. So, while you may be really impressed by her, she's nothing for educated Black people to get excited about.
She's not kicking down the doors of the good ole boy network. She's holding open their doors for them, taking their coats, and serving the food. That is all. Get it? The fact that she MIGHT have a shot at being present among them doesn't mean she will be there as their equal.
You may believe that we're "black first as history shows", but the reality is far more complicated. History has shown that being black certainly doesn't mean we have always had each other's interests at heart. Furthermore, my identity as a woman is just as visible as my identity as a person of color. Someone who looks at me will be aware of both simultaneously. Similarly, the reality of this world is such that my socio-economic status will often be just as immediately evident.
Perhaps, you should consider the complexities of identity before making simplistic claims about who "we" are.
Because he represents the best of us. He is a role model whether he likes it or not. This comes with the honors; with the territory. He has a duty to God first, then to his race. Because he represents Black people, we want to see him with a Black love interest. The one thing I personally respect about obama is the love interest in a Black woman. I may not like his politics, but I admire him for not having a white woman on his arm as the leader a superpower.

Your claim that AMERICANS have no religious tests for office is at least debatable. Fortunately, the CONSTITUTION has no such religious test but MILLIONS of AMERICANS still do. When was the last time a non-Christian was elected President--I mean someone who as a matter of PUBLIC RECORD was non-Christian. (Who knows if non-Christians unknown to be such were elected?) As late as 1960 simply being CATHOLIC (which is a form of Christian belief) was controversial; and at one time no Catholic could hope to get elected in this land of fanatical anti-Papists. Now Jew has ever been elected. A Muslim president is clearly out of the question. Conserivatives KNOW that there are religious tests or they wouldn't try to discredit Obama by saying he's a Muslim. Voting is a citizenship right, while check cashing or driving an automobile is not. The majority of Blacka vote Demccrat, and have since FDR. 85--95% of Blacks have voted Demccrat for the past 40 years or more. That's FACT, not opinion. Most elder and youth, especially college youth vote Democrat. Two thirds of those30 and under voted for Obama in 2008. It is a FACT that youth, the poor, the elderly, Blacks are lwss likely have all the new ID required by Republicans govrnorships---and that these people more likely vote Democrat than Republican. Not surprising that ONLY in states governed by Republicans are these new requirements imposed. They must be struck down in court; otherwise I recommend CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE, OCCUPYING polls until you are allowed to vote and refusing to leave the premises until you vote or are arrested..

Little does he realize, working on the plantations for 400 years with no pay, according to our own black behavior sciencetic, Dr. Amos Wilson, there is a problem many blacks feel about work, especially when they are working minimum wage jobs, we see ourselves as slaves, working low wage or slave wage jobs. Most blacks do not know the history of slavery, but most know we were held as slaves. So blacks do not have a problem working, we just do not like being paid slave wages. On top of that, even when we go to college, get a degree, we are still not paid like the whites. Many of our situations don't even allow us to go to school, living in a racist society, we have so may obstacles coming against us. And this plantation mentality nut, cannot even think like that, so he go off, talking crazy, so that he can get an amen from white folks, that is the only way, he will get an amen from white folks, by putting black people down. Oh they are not going to say anything negative about his church either, because in a time of social unrest, they will use step-n-fetche, to help control the people. There's a scene in the film called REDS in which John Reed, speaking in the Middle East suddenly notices an explosion of enthusiasm in reply to the end o fhis speech. He asks someone about it, and one of Muslims said "We are supporting your call for a holy war of Islamic peoples against the Western infidels Reed had actually said CLASS WAR, but Soviet leaders conveniently mistranslated Reed's words for reasons of political expediency.(And I've read that there my be some historical basis for that event so depicted).
I'm sure that's not the first time. And I'm sure that those Stalinist loons resorted to such measures. And now Russia, and America, are both dealing with the "blowback."

Two and a half Men - White. No blacks casts. Pan Am - all white cast. Bones, House, Lie to Me, The Office - predominately white shows. Give it rest. Whites are well represented - no threat of extinction on television at all. You bring up BET and television is soaking in White representation. Why do some Whites resent Blacks and Latinos having anything to call their own, when they have so mucn?
This is so petty. You can't force interracial dating. I think these guys were just looking for a reason to sue, but this is pointless. People have the right to date the race they prefer. This show will look like an affirmative action mess when token blacks start appearing on camera and smiling like someone really wants them there. It's degrading to sue just to force someone to date you on television.

Anyone who is knowledgeable about the SOR can clearly see that this persistent, self-defeating phenomena is a direct result of centuries of brainwashing Black men, and Black women too.
I do not look upon these statements by particular Black men with as much disdain as I used to, having realized the ultimate motive behind such statements.
Light-hued skin is nothing more than a factor and living proof of the brutality of u.s. slavery. We all know the story about the rapes, sexual explotation and outright abuse of our Black female ancestors. Truthfully, there is nothing wrong with light-skinned Black women; it is the use of cosmetic preferences for these women over other beautiful Black women that makes this phenomena unjust. all of us are created by The Creator, and given an individuality that makes each of us exclusive. Diversity in tones and hues of the epidermis was prevalent and uncontroversial throughout history, even before the advent of the u.s.
For Black people, especially Black men, to put so much expensive and spiritually-depleting energy into the nonsense of Black women’s skin color, especially at a time when our collective conscience can be raised to a higher level of cultural understanding is the epitome of “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Instead, we should continuously work on becoming “adults” and preoccupy our time with much more serious and productive issues, such as reenforcing positive images and psyches for our children in every aspect of our functioning lives as much as poosible.
The best way to counter this type of regressive behavior is, again, to love yourself first and appreciate the gifts endowed upon each of us by The Creator. In actuality, Black women are, hands-down, some of the most beautiful, highly-attractive, sexy and women in the entire world, along with having physical, spiritual and emotional attributes that are “e-m-u-l-a-t-e-d” by many, many women around the world. Has anyone ever paid attention to “this” phenomena??!!…
One of the traits of the SOR is the art of deflection and deception, tools which are used to “hide” truth and the real, underlying intentions of those who want to be like us.

If Black people controlled the destiny of our consumer dollars, by ensuring through a strategic-designed, systematic, well-defined plan that ensures each earned dollar benefits as many Black people as possible, through every economic ad social measure, before leaving outside of our “virtual” community, there would undoubtedly be a seismic shift in the economic habits we exhibit today. Why? Because by implementing a strategic plan into our functioning lives, from top to bottom, front to back, airtight with no wiggle room, “and” seeing the rewards of a truly-effective economic system workng for “us” as it does for other ethnicities (Singapore, Dubai, Brazil, etc.) would make a heluva difference.
Although whites do have a large amount of tangible material wealth, i.e. real estate, businesses, high-tech hardware, etc., they rely upon, exploit, (even steal!) the intellectual properties and ingenuity of Black/People of Color in the u.s. and abroad. As a matter of fact, have always done so with Black people, from slavery to post-Reconstruction to urban riots (i.e. Tulsa Race Riot of 1921, a purely-perfect example of economic jealousy by OK whites) to the foreclosures and personal wealth losses by Black households and businesses over the past 4-5 years (Great Recession).
The key to economic success from the system of racism is to use this “crack” in the wall of the dam, using our dollars to build a economic substructure as a bridge to detach ourselves from whites.
although i can appreciate what Star said, she shouldn't be directing her frustration towards VH1...it's the public that watches the show (reality shows in general); VH1 is simply capitalizing off society's newfound interest in vapid, shallow, rich bullies' false lives.
Star's message should also be more directed towards parents who allow their children to watch these shows. Does this have to be a bad thing? I saw a speaker who had written a book on the influences the pharmaceutical companies have on our society. The findings of this book were suppressed by these companies and rejected by many psychiatrist. That's why the author was doing lecture tours. The book stated that many studies were done on what happens when drugs stay in your body. Drugs are suppose to have the purpose of helping a diseased situation, and they do. However, he cited many test have shown that the longer these drugs, (especially psychiatric drugs, anti depressants, etc.) remain, in your body, the more problems you will have down the road. In fact, some of these drugs create the need for further drugs. Of course, this could be debated, but this information is not being released , in any major way, to have a debate. He stated that though many studies back him up, getting this data out has been very difficult. The speaker felt that this had more to do with the fact that the drug industry is a powerful industry worldwide. It's a matter of profit, not health. His argument wasn't even against taking such drugs. His argument was against having people stay on certain drugs way after they had served their purpose. It sparked my interest, because I was taught (biology 101) that the body was natural, organic and any foreign substance, if allowed to remain, eventually brings harm to it. Many people believe that that's the source of cancer in our society, i.e. chemicals in our food and air. The book, "Natural Cures they Don't Want You to Know About" is a popular book that states this. Also,
There are so many Black children (especially boys) given drugs today, I'm dismayed that there would be an argument for more drugs being introduced to our people. Especially after a report came out, a few years back, stating that many of the children given drugs didn't even need them. In other words, they were misdiagnosed. The drug empire has influence over the media, too. So I'm dismayed, but not surprised such an article was written. There are too many drugs (legal and illegal) being dispensed into our society. The addiction to legal drugs has now surpassed the addiction to illegal drugs. Why? I believe it's due to the push of drugs onto our society, by the medical field, via the media. And the fact that American don't want to look deep to solve and/or work out their problems, when a drug can just make things go away. That's why we're a drug-ridden society. DRUGS AREN'T AN ANSWER TO EVERYTHING.

Tired of the stupid theory floating around on this forum that black women hate us black men. It's simply not true.
Do ALL black women support black men ? Of course not. Neither do all women of any other group. But a lot of black women do support us once you strive to do positive things. Unfortunately for black men, we have a nasty stereotype to fight, part of which has been promoted and encouraged by black male idiots who insist on being the most negative example of a man possible. Consequently, that leads to a lot of us having to go through the suspicious eye of our women. But this is also the case for non black women as many are just as suspicious of black men, if not worse. But I can safely say that in my experience, a good amount of black women have shown positive black men respect once they see we are not out there to dog them out.
I'm not sure what is wrong with some of the men and women on Topix trying to encourage black men and women to hate each other. Black women are individuals just like other women are. Some are horrible, but some are angels. Some are unnecessarily aggressive and rude, some of very sweet and polite. Some are control freaks who insist on dominating every aspect of your life, others are quite comfortable being your partner, giving you space and letting you take the lead quite often (assuming he is leading her in a positive direction). It is up to us as black men to be positive partners for our women AND choose women sensibly. There is more to it but in my opinion, these are good starting points.

That was the main theme of our book, “The Interracial Con Game” because the evidence that “black love/sex is taboo” is too overwhelming to deny it.
I think you’re right, everything black people do well seems to make white people more insecure. Our failures VALIDATE them and make them feel normal
because secretly I suspect that they know they are not, otherwise, why the need to inferiorize all non-white people? That just doesn’t add up to healthy self-esteem…
In our book, there was a black female who was said she asked why there were more black men and women in movies and films making love and the white person she asked (i forget the exact quote) said, “White america isn’t ready for black love”

This speech of Dr. King was recorded August 14, 1958, at the Galilee Baptist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana by his good friend and colleague Dr. C.O. Many recordings exist to document the civil rights movement in the 60's but little has survived from the formative years of the late fifties. The speech has the feel of a classic sermon, and in many respects it was just that. The Speech at Galilee is a huge contribution to U.S. history and should be in every civil rights collection in America.
Filled with rare and special moments, the Galilee speech represents the FIRST KNOWN FULL LENGTH RECORDING of Martin Luther King, Jr., then an unknown 29 year-old Baptist preacher from Georgia with an inspired heart and a resonant voice. As a white individual, I just have to say that this is so embarrassing. The level of racial blindness or just plain stupidity necessary to think Trayvon's killing was anything less than murder motivated by racism is staggering. I am sad to esy that a lot of white people I have heard discuss this case seem to be of this ignorant view. Recently, in my city (columbus ohio) there was a rally to demand justice for Trayvon, and over 1,500 people showed up, but I saw only a few dozen other white people. This needs to change. It is in the interest of all people to unite against racism. But for that to happen, we whites have to learn to see it.

It seems the most popular argument I hear is Tray should have explained himself to Zimmerman. What does that tell you? If Zim was black and Trey white we know what would be the outcome.
We didn't need a poll to tell us this. We could have pridicted this result long before Zimmerman pulled the trigger. My only surprise is how the black people have voted. Shows how divided we are. If Zimmerman had shot an animal or a gay men, niinety nine percent of white people would have said he was guilty. Many of those people probably wish they could do what Zimmerman did.
If Zimmerman was black and Trayvon Martin was white he would be in jail by now.

You don’t see the u.s. “bullying” nor “threatening” China as they are doing/have done with Iran and Libya, respectively.
The u.s. is becoming more and more transparent in its international profile as just aniother bully who will be challenged by some unknown and unexpected nation, just as it happens on the schoolyard. So are the participants in the SOR who continually victimize Black and other People of Color unnecessarily around the globe with acts of injustice. This type of expected behavior comes from the root of self-hatred, which why it is so important (really!) for Black people, in this country particularly, to not imitate these type of behavior patterns. again, as we have been told for millenium, it’s self-destructive to hate the gifts given to you by The Creator. Anyone who first loves themself have no problem with differences inherent in others. Where’s the threat when you can easily consider and care for another’s welfare as you do for yourself?

That’s not real talk. We can’t make white people “do” anything. What we can do is control ourselves, our reactions, and what strategies we need to deal with this system.

I agree, our power lies in our minds, which is why this system tries to control them. Otherwise, it wouldn’t matter what we thought as long as they had enough guns and bullets to keep us in line.

@Cree Great post! You hit the nail on the head. Amerikkka has a Justice Department but NOT a system of justice. We’re living in the belly of the Beast. The Trayvon Martin case breaks ny heart. And I understand why people are so upset. But the real question is….How do you get justice from the unjust?

Republicans are no longer the party of Lincoln or Emancipation. The "grand old party" has become the "grand oil party." When Farai Chideya notes that the cultural values of many Black Americans are quite conservative, it is overlooked that the POLITICAL & ECONOMIC values of most Black Americans are not conservative, but are imbued with progressives attitudes favoring social justice, especially for the disadvantaged. That is why Blacks began to move toward the Democratic Party during the FDR years. That's why Blacks became more involved with Democrats during the 1960s & 70s. In the 1964 election, Barry Goldwater ran against President Jonnson on a platform which OPPOSED Civil rights. What did the Republicans think our parents were going to do? Vote against civil rights--our rights--which our parents were fighting and sacrificing for? Then there was the Southern strategy, beginning with Nixon and intensifying with Reagan, ofr appealing to white racist sentiments to break up the FDR coalition, largely by scapegoating us (though doing so in more coded racist language rather than the explicit racist rhetoric of the past). What did Republicans expect? That we'd sing their praises?

Interestingly enough, Dr. King pointed out that political opposition to civil rights actually emanated froma kind of diabolical alliance between racist southern Democrats and right wing and largely racist Northern Republicans.
At any rate, it was Republican Barry Goldwater who opposed the Civil rights Act of 1964, not the Democrat Lyndon Johnson.

People always whining about food stamps but not about farm subsidies, it is all welfare. Michelle Bachmann and other Republicans will keep getting theirs from Uncle Sam.
Why is the welfare conversation only focused on food stamps and AFDC? Why no outrage on farm subsidies going to millionaires, it is still your taxpaying dollars?
So government intervention is demanded in this area, the whole time the same folks are whining about government handouts and entitlements? I thought the Republicans resented the government having its hands in their businesses and how business should be allowed to prosper and grow without government intrusion?

I don't think Mr. Harvey is literally telling women to think like men, but to understand how men think when it comes to dating. Dr. Boyce I think that you are so right! I like that I am a softer but just as strong as my husband. We juggle differnt roles for the outcome of us being the best parents of our son and only child! Thinking like a man only gets me in trouble because I don't see the world as he does being the nurturer in my home and I can't keep a straight face. But the love is equal that we give each other.
If whites had such a work ethic as they love to claim, why did they force Africans’ do all the hard work for no pay, for hundreds of years while white focused on raping, beating and killing blacks. The problem with whites is that they want to have a clear conscience, in a world that has been ruined by their sins and the sins of their ancestors. They hate the guilt, by association that comes with being white, which is why they hate the topic of race ever being raise. So much so that they start threatening a race war, when race gets to close for comfort. Grow up white people. Race therapy is what you really need. There is light at the end of the tunnel, but you have to go through the tunnel first. This is what most just can’t do. Because the tunnel is just to black to bare. It’s their choice. The author of this article has appearently NOT spent much time in SouthEast. Appearently they have not talked to many people in his district. The man BEATS DOWN all challengers for his seat every election cycle. So im thinking he is doing SOMETHING right for his people. As SoultrySoul has stated, he is the "PEOPLES CHAMP". He is not a BUCK DANCER like many of our OTHER black politicians. And let us not forget that it was then" MAYOR" MARION BARRY that was KEY in helping to make the MILLION MAN MARCH a reality. He kept his duty even when almost every other politician in DC left. Including President Bill Clinton. The federal government shut down on that day from fear. Everybody was told to leave the city. National gaurd troops were called up. And Marion Barry kept fighting to make it happen. So for me, Marion Barry will still get my respect. PERIOD.

No, the Republican Party is so far right now that it is nearly fascist. Both parties stink, the the stench is far worse in the Republican camp.
I'm a young adult learning new information and finding the truth. Over the years, I'm becoming more meek. I will still defend my beliefs though when it is necessary. I am 42 years old now (being born in December of 1983). I like living in Hampton Roads. Hampton Roads is apart of Southeastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina. I live in the 7 city group of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Newport News, Hampton, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach. Yorktown, Williamsburg, Glocuster, Cape Charles, Elizabeth City, Currituck, Sussex, and Poquoson are apart of Hampton Roads as well. So, I don't forget those important places as well.
